Description:  WB. Here is the first of seven images of aerial photos by C.R. Hoser that were taken over Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1941. Pictured at the bottom left are the Pennsylvania Railroad's ALTO Tower, the lead to the Hollidaysburg Branch, the 17th Street Bridge, and the Test Plant. Beyond them are the 12th Street Car Shops, the Passenger Station and Trainshed, the 12th Street Footbridge, and the Freight Station. A steam locomotive is pulling a westbound freight train under the 9th Street Footbridge. Just past the 7th Street Bridge are the PRR's Passenger Car Shops, the 4th Street Footbridge, the Finishing Roundhouse, the Steel Car Shops, and the Erecting & Machine Shop in Juniata. To the right of the Finishing Roundhouse are the west- and eastbound passenger tracks, the Westbound Forwarding Yard (for crew changes), and the Eastbound Receiving Yard. Description:  WB. Here is the second of seven images of aerial photos by C.R. Hoser that were taken over Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1941. Description:  WB. Here is the third of seven images of aerial photos by unidentified photographers that were taken over Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1955. Prominent here are the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Works at 12th Street. Partially visible at the left is the wrought-iron 12th Street Footbridge. Near the end of the Bridge and stretching to one of the Shop buildings is an open-air gantry crane that was used during the construction of the PRR's F-39 "TrucTrain" flatcars. At the visible end of the Bridge is the Master Mechanic's Building, now the site of the Railroaders Memorial Museum. William E. Burket Collection.

Description:  WB. Here is the fifth of seven images of aerial photos by unidentified photographers that were taken over Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1946. Pictured at the top right are some of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 12th Street Car Shops. A little to the left, a steam locomotive is pulling a westbound freight train under the 12th Street Footbridge. At the Altoona Station, a steam-powered passenger train is about to begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown and points West. In the early 1900's, this area was the industrial heart of the PRR: the Altoona Machine Shops, as well as the Eastern and Western Roundhouses, were located here. Description:  WB. Here is an image of a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 28 August 1941. Shown here is the back side of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Locomotive Test Plant. Prominent here is the combination coaling station and ash tipple. Every steam locomotive tested here burned coal and produced ashes. Here's where the coal was fed into the Test Plant and where the ashes were dumped into waiting hoppers. Partially visible in the background is the Test Plant Building. The materiel in the foreground was used in the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. William E. Burket Collection.

Description:  WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1946. Shown here at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Locomotive Test Plant is engine #6200, the S-2 (6-8-6) "Steam Turbine" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1944, rated at 6,900 horsepower, and retired in January of 1952 after just eight years of experimental service. Description:  WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1929. Shown here is one of the buildings constituting the Pennsylvania Railroad's South Altoona Shops & Foundry. Everything from car wheels to brass bells to electricity was produced here. In the foreground are the tracks of the Hollidaysburg Branch line. From 1850 until the Horseshoe Curve was completed in 1854, these tracks served as the mainline between Altoona and the PRR's connection with the New Portage Railroad in Duncansville. William E.
